What Is Zcash?

Zcash (ZEC) is a digital currency built for financial privacy. It lets you pay someone without revealing who sent the money, who received it, or how much was transferred. The network went live on October 28, 2016. Zooko Wilcox-O’Hearn, a longtime security researcher, led the team that created it using Bitcoin’s source code as a starting point.

So, what is Zcash doing that Bitcoin can’t? The Zcash crypto network uses a type of math called zk-SNARKs, a form of zero-knowledge proof. Here’s a simple way to picture it. You can prove that a payment is valid without sharing any private details. The network confirms the math is correct and never needs to see your data.

What do these numbers tell you? Market cap is the price multiplied by the total amount of ZEC currently in circulation. Trading volume is the dollar value of all ZEC that changed hands today. A price move backed by heavy volume usually carries more weight. FDV answers a simple question: what would ZEC be worth if all 21 million coins were already mined?

Zcash All-Time High and Low

Zcash hit its all-time high of $1,693.20 on September, 2026. Its all-time low was $15.87 on July 5, 2024. Both figures come from TradingView.

Why do some sites list a far higher peak? When ZEC first went live in October 2016, only a handful of coins were for sale. A few early buyers paid around $5,941, and CoinMarketCap still records that as the peak. We give you both numbers, so you’re never confused by the difference.

Shielded vs. Transparent Transactions

ZEC gives you two ways to send money:

  • Transparent: Similar to Bitcoin. Anyone can view the addresses and amounts.
  • Shielded: Everything stays encrypted. Only you, plus anyone you share a viewing key with, can see the details.

You decide which mode to use. Because privacy is optional, exchanges find it easier to support ZEC. Data from ZCash shows nearly 4.9 million ZEC held in shielded addresses. To us, that indicates that real people are actually using the privacy features.

Zcash Tokenomics: Supply, Mining, and Halvings

Zcash will never have more than 21 million coins, and miners earn roughly half as many new coins every 4 years. Here’s a quick look at the numbers that matter to you:

Block reward split

80% miners, 8% Zcash Community Grants, 12% lockbox

Bitcoin uses the same 21 million limit. Fresh ZEC enters the market only through mining. After each halving, miners receive half the reward they got before. A slower flow of new coins can ease selling pressure over the long run.

Development has received 20% of every block reward since 2020. In November 2024, the NU6 upgrade changed how that 20% gets divided. One portion pays for community grants. The other sits in a lockbox until holders agree on how to spend it.

Quick note for you: a few sites still claim Zcash runs on SHA-256 or pays a “founders’ reward.” Neither is true today. We check these details often, so the facts on this page stay reliable.

What Drives the Zcash Price?

Six main forces drive Zcash’s price: privacy demand, big-money flows, exchange listings, regulation, halvings, and Bitcoin’s direction. Here’s what each one can mean for your ZEC:

  • Privacy demand: When more people want private payments, demand for ZEC tends to rise.
  • Institutional flows: Money from funds and ETFs can add buying power and make trading smoother.
  • Exchange listings: Getting listed on a new exchange opens the door to more buyers. Losing a listing does the reverse.
  • Regulation: New rules targeting privacy coins can change the mood in a hurry.
  • Halvings and upgrades: Traders tend to bet on supply cuts and network upgrades well before they happen.
  • Bitcoin’s direction: When BTC rises or falls, most altcoins, including ZEC, usually follow.

How to Buy Zcash

You can buy Zcash through any crypto exchange that offers ZEC where you live. Follow these five steps:

  1. Choose an exchange that supports ZEC in your state or country. Some platforms restrict privacy coins, so confirm this first.
  2. Sign up and verify your identity.
  3. Add funds using dollars or another cryptocurrency.
  4. Place your order for ZEC at the Zcash current price listed on the exchange.
  5. Transfer your coins to a wallet you own. Many users pick a shielded wallet like Zashi or a hardware wallet like Ledger or Trezor.

Here’s our advice: try a small test transfer before sending a larger amount.

Is Zcash a Good Investment? Know the Risks

Zcash is a risky asset with big price swings, and the choice to buy it is yours alone. We won’t tell you what to buy. We will help you look at the case for Zcash crypto from both sides.

On the bullish side, people point to the fixed supply, growing use of shielded assets, and ZEC’s huge gains in 2025 and 2026. On the bearish side, they point to regulatory pressure, exchange delistings, and past crashes of 40% or more. Forecasts for ZEC are all over the map, so don’t lean too hard on any one target. Put in only the money you’re comfortable losing.
