Risk On Versus Risk Off

There are indicators that show us where the money is flowing. Intermarket relationships may provide some subtle clues. A notable example is the ratio between consumer discretionary stocks (risk-on) and consumer staples stocks (risk-off).

The chart below illustrates how the ratio is lagging the overall stock market. This tells us two things: Value is becoming more popular than growth, and the market is cautious.
